Idanha the Old and Idanha the New

Founded by the Romans at the end of the century. First BC and elevated to the municipality about a century later, the city survives the invasions of the Germanic peoples. With the Suevi it becomes seat of bishopric, a status that it maintains with the Visigoths. This period refers to one of his best known legends, that of King Wamba.
The Muslim invasion in the early eighth century and the subsequent wars of Christian reconquest brought with it a serious setback to the development of the city.

Monsanto

Tourist icon of the region, Monsanto Historic Village is a peculiar experience for those who visit.
The oldest part is at the highest point, where the Templars built a fence with a keep. To this structure is later added another one, paced by towers, with two uneven floors. The first includes a cistern and the Church of St. Mary. In the lower part, the main gate of the fence is torn. Outside the walls, the primitive settlement around S. Miguel Chapel, a small treasure trove of Romanesque architecture, is defended by a low fence. Overlooking the cluster, now in ruins, stands the Tower of Pião.

Penha Garcia and Vila Fraga

Its origins are lost in time. It has been the seat of the municipality from the thirteenth century and couto homiziado at the request of Prince Henry until the late eighteenth century. D. Afonso III granted him a letter from Foral in 1256 and D. Manuel in 1510. D. Dinis donated the village with his castle to the Knights of the Temple and with its extinction passed to the Order of Christ.
